I'll never forget holding my mom's wedding album as a little girl, my grandmother sitting beside me, holding one side, pointing out who was who and telling stories about the day. My parents got married in the early 1970's, so their pictures were of bell bottoms, flowery peasant dresses, and one weird superimposed image of my mom's head looking over the congregation (Yikes!), which I thought was the most beautiful image in the world. The way the pictures looked didn't really matter to me as a little kid, though: I was transfixed with the event that had brought my parents together, and I was swept up in feelings of love and tenderness that must have permeated that day.

And the memory of my grandmother and me, each holding one side of the album, is one I will cherish forever, especially now that she's gone. And it never would have happened with images on a web gallery somewhere. The tangible, physical memory is what matters to me -- how she smelled like her favorite lotion, how she laughed when she saw herself in the old photos, how her touch was gentle and reverent as she turned the pages. And every time I hold that album in my hands, I think of that moment with her, me holding the very same album that both of us held together.
